At the 2008 Annual General Meeting of TESL Saskatchewan (formerly SCENES), the membership approved the proposal to require recipients of TESL Saskatchewan accreditation to renew their status every five years. All TESL Saskatchewan members who were accredited on or before May 2, 2009 will be required to apply for renewal of accreditation between Jan. 1 and May 2, 2014. After May 2, 2014, renewal of accreditation applications will be due on the fifth anniversary of each member’s accreditation or renewal of accreditation.
Why do I need to renew my accreditation?
The best teachers tend to be those who stay fresh through ongoing learning about their profession. They also tend to be those who place themselves in the position of being able to share ideas, excitements, and challenges with a caring community of professional colleagues.
By making accreditation renewal a mandatory activity, TESL Saskatchewan intends to strengthen the culture of lifelong professional learning that is one of the fundamentals of our organization. We also intend to motivate accredited members to better maintain their membership in TESL Saskatchewan on a year-to-year basis. This in turn will ensure that they have continual access to information about learning opportunities provided by TESL Saskatchewan, TESL Canada, and other relevant organizations or programs.
In addition, we hope our members will be able to use this policy for support when they apply to employers for professional development resources. Increasingly, employers will be expected to engage teachers who qualify for accreditation. By making a very basic level of regular in-service learning mandatory, we hope more employers will support their staff by providing the funding and time to take advantage of professional learning opportunities.
How will I qualify for accreditation renewal?
Renewal of accreditation will be granted on the basis of the following criteria:
- The applicant will maintain TESL Saskatchewan membership every year during the five years leading up to the renewal deadline.
- The applicant will be able to provide documentation of a minimum of twenty-five (25) hours of relevant professional development activities carried out during the five year period leading up to the renewal deadline.
- All TESL Saskatchewan members who were accredited on or before May 2, 2009 will be required to apply for renewal of accreditation between Jan. 1 and May 2, 2014. After May 2, 2014, renewal of accreditation applications will be due on the fifth anniversary of each member’s accreditation or renewal of accreditation.
- A fee of $20 will be charged for accreditation renewal.
