9:00am - 3:15pm, April 29, 2023
We are very excited to invite all our members to the 2023 annual conference: Moving Forward, which is going to be a joint collaboration between TESL SK, SK TEAL, and TESL MB. This online Conference will provide a platform for ESL professionals, volunteers and language learners to share best practices and latest research findings; to explore new trends in classroom technology; to develop better strategies for work-life balance and teacher wellness.
"You are always a student, never a master. You have to keep moving forward.” Conrad Hall

Let us welcome our keynote speaker: Dr. Ena Lee
Dr. Ena Lee is an Assistant Professor in Language, Literacy, and English as an Additional Language Education in the Faculty of Education at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, BC. Her interdisciplinary work is situated in the intersections of applied linguistics with equity studies. Specifically, she draws on identity theory, critical race theory, and transnational feminist theory to inform anti-oppressive praxes in EAL research and education. Her research has been published in TESOL Quarterly, TESL Canada Journal, International Journal of Multilingualism, and Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, among others.
Moving forward and “imagining otherwise” together
This year’s annual conference—a joint collaboration between TESL SK, SK TEAL, and TESL MB—invites attendees to consider how we continue moving forward in the field of English language education. In this vein, I outline some of the current struggles faced by ESL professionals, volunteers, and language learners and discuss how systems of dominance and oppression can lead us to “misrecognize” (cf. Bourdieu, 1989) these struggles as individually-rooted rather than deeply and systemically interconnected within the “politics of location” (Rich, 1984) of English language education.
Critical and feminist responses such as counter-story (Solórzano & Yosso, 2001) and “testimonio” (Rodriguez-Campo, 2021) help to reveal the complex webs of power pervading our individual stories while feminist intersectional analyses (cf. Crenshaw, 1989) illuminate possibilities for how diverse ESL education stakeholders might develop “coalitional identities” (Taylor, 2022) in service of more socially-just and collective transformations of our field. I conclude by proposing how this “imagining otherwise” (Chuh, 2003) offers one way of moving forward together in solidarity.
