As we all continue to develop different approaches and tools as part of on going local/regional reconciliation and newcomer awareness building efforts, I want to bring to your attention the "Welcome to our Homelands," video and study guide produced by ISS of BC that's now up on our website: https://issbc.org/blog/welcome-to-our-homelands.
This seven-minute video features six Indigenous individuals from across the country extending a welcoming message to newcomers to Canada in their native languages, and provides a glimpse of aboriginal history and culture that can serve as a "jumping off point for further learning." An accompanying study guide provides resources and links to helpful information that can deepen the understanding of Indigenous peoples by newcomers, most of whom lack the knowledge to benefit from meaningful dialogue and friendship-building with the original inhabitants of Canada.
Feel free to use and forward both the video and the study guide as appropriate. Please note that we have plans to provide voice-overs and subtitles in 10 other languages for the video and study guide in the future. I want to thank our indigenous filmmaker Kamala Todd, study guide author Kory Wilson, Indigenous Advisory Committee members and funder Vancity Credit Union for these tools and contributions to reconciliation efforts.
