Dean Kush Named New SaskCulture CEO After a rigorous search, with support and assistance from the David Aplin Group, SaskCulture Chair James Rose announced that Dean Kush has been named as the new CEO. Dean brings a wealth of experience to the position, including his 10 years of experience within SaskCulture, initially as Program Manager and for a longer period of time, as Associate CEO. With Dean already being an integral part of the SaskCulture staff team, the Board is confident the organization will move forward effectively and efficiently with his leadership and passion. |
SaskCulture Virtual Members' Forum In light of the creation of a new five-year strategic plan, and the COVID-19 pandemic, SaskCulture is planning to host a virtual members' forum to provide an on the new strategic plan and to gather thoughts on how we can work with members to address the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The initial session will be held on May 6, 2020 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. If there are more than 70 registrations, a second session will be held on May 7, 2020 from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. In Memoriam: Norma Jean Byrd: 1941 - 2020 The cultural community is saddened to learn about the passing of Norma Jean Byrd on Thursday, April 23, 2020. Norma Jean was a prominent and beloved Elder in Saskatchewan, who contributed enormously to SaskCulture’s early work with the First Nation and Métis Advisory Circle. She was widely known for her generosity, kindness and compassion, which she demonstrated throughout her life’s work teaching and sharing Indigenous culture and traditions with all who sought her guidance and help. She was recognized with numerous awards, such as the Governor-General of Canada’s 125 Canada Medal, and a YWCA Woman of Distinction Award, in honour of her outstanding work in the community. A memorial ceremony is planned at a later date, due to gathering restrictions, but a Facebook group has been created to celebrate her life and for people to share memories. |
Provincial Government Five-Phase Plan to Reopen Province The Government of Saskatchewan announced a five-phase plan on April 23 to reopen the province in incremental steps over the month of May. While some restrictions remain in place, and new guidelines must be followed moving forward, the proposed timeline of the government plan can be found here. |
South West District Board of Directors Nominations South West District seeks people with a passion for sport, culture, or recreation, to be on the board of directors. Deadline extended to May 15, 2020. Full details can be found here. |
Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts Nominations The Governor General's Awards in Visual and Media Arts are granted to artists in recognition of remarkable careers in either of those fields. Up to eight awards are given annually, and nominations must be submitted to the Canada Council for the Arts by June 30, 2020. For eligibility information, or to submit a nomination, click here. |
Federal Government Announces Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance The federal government announced a program to help small businesses address rent challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Parts of this relief program are applicable to non-profits and charitable organizations. To find out more about it, click here. |
Federal Government Announces Supports for Students and New Grads The federal government announced supports for students and new graduates affected by COVID-19. The Canada Emergency Student Benefit is aimed at those who do not qualify for CERB, whle the Canada Student Service Grant is intended for students who do national service and serve their communities. Events Calendar Shares Virtual/Remote Events While the COVID-19 pandemic has put a pause on in-person gatherings, many groups and organizations have taken to the internet to keep communities connected to culture. The Events Calendar on SaskCulture's website allows submitters to indicate that an event takes place online. Help promote your upcoming digital events by submitting them to the Events Calendar. |
Saskatchewan Views the Global Pandemic The Western Development Museums of Saskatchewan have launched a crowd-sourced photography exhibit to focus on how COVID-19 has affected individuals, families, communities and the province. To view the collection, or submit your own photographs, click here. |
Take Out a Sask Lotteries Subscription Sask Lotteries funds over 12,000 sport, culture and recreation groups across Saskatchewan. Every time you purchase a lottery ticket in Saskatchewan, a portion of that revenue supports a wealth of organizations in our communities. Subscriptions allow lottery players to play draw-based games – including LOTTO MAX, LOTTO 6/49, WESTERN MAX, WESTERN 649, DAILY GRAND and EXTRA – for up to a year in advance. Subscriptions can be purchased by phone, by mail, or on the Sask Lotteries website. |
